Mexico's leader of contemporary dance, Tania Pérez-Salas Compañia de Danza is vibrantly known for their intense theatricality and surrealist choreography. Their combination of professional technique and expressive emotion drips with artistic passion from the stage. The obvious translation of human feelings into movements allows Perez to reach out and connect emotionally with audiences across the world.
Self-driven by her love for literature, philosophy, and visual art, the choreography of Pérez-Salas generally stems from real life events. While 3.Fourteen Sixteen was completely unplanned and spawned from her gut, The Waters of Forgetfulness, titled after and inspired by Ivan Illich's essay, is a reflection on water's vital role in life, transforming the stage into a shallow pool that in turn acts as a mirror to the dancers' languid and sensual movements. Her new work Ex-Stasis, set to premiere in 2010, explores the body's lost communication from the mind, failing to listen to the pleasure and satisfaction found in one's dreams.
